Abstract

The reported work deals with the numerical analysis of membrane strructures made of PVC-coated fabrics. Our considerations encompass both an appropriate constitutive description of the complicated material behaviour and the development of a suitable computation procedure for viscoelasticstructures. The complete paper will appear in two parts in this journal: the present Part I is devoted to the mechanical and numerical modeling of viscoelastic materials, proposing novel schemes for the integration in time of the rheological relations. The numeric properties of the scheme are analysed and tested. The forthcoming Part II of the paper concentrates on the application of the developments in Part I to the constitutive description of a specific PVC-coated fabric and includes experimental testing. In addition, the numerical prediction of the short- and long-term response of certain test confugurations made of the anisotropic materials is compared with experimental measurements.
